Margaret Thatcher...

Author: Callum Roberts Monday, 15 April 2013

3rd of May in 1979 Margaret Thatcher was elected as Prime Minster. On 17th April 2013 her Funeral Service is to be held at St Paul's Cathedral, London.

St Paul's Cathedral is within walking distance to our Holborn Office and the funeral procession will pass along Fleet Street.

Margaret Thatcher took power in 1979 at a time that Britain was on its knee's.

In the past, Estate Agents were not looked upon favorably (much as if you are a banker today) and at the time when Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister, some may feel that it was she who started the spirit of 'get rich quick & greed is good'.

Property prices boomed and Britain became powerful again economically, if not strategically.

She was the longest serving leader in modern times (although some of us were not born at a time when she was Prime Minister), being Prime Minister for 11 years. She was elected 3 times to be Prime Minister for Britain and was not defeated in a general election.

In a speech in 1975 she said 'A man's right to work as he will, to spend what he earns, to own property, to have the state as servant and not as master, they are the essence of a free economy, and on that freedom all our other freedoms depends'

She gave millions of people the opportunity to be able to buy their own homes through the scheme 'Right to Buy' which gave council tenants  the right to buy their own property with a Discount.

The Barbican estate which we often sell and rent properties in was (is) a Council owned development where many people took up the option of buying.

With the death of Margaret Thatcher is has bought up a lot of speculation about whether her polices were right or wrong.

Here at Callum Roberts we are not political analysts or in favour of one party over another. We do however believe that everybody should be able to state their opinion as we are still in a free country.

As such, we believe in a free market and will see 17th April 2013 as a sad day, where someone who loved her country will be laid to rest.
